Cierto Extra Añejo is aged in French oak casks that held Cognac and Armagnac — Drinkhacker reviewed it as the oldest tequila Cierto makes, from the men behind Fuenteseca and Don Fulano. Enrique Fonseca and Sergio Mendoza are fourth- and fifth-generation agaveros whose families have grown agave since the 1800s; Cierto is their additive-free luxury line, made at La Tequileña, NOM 1146, in the town of Tequila from fully mature estate agave in the red clay of the Atotonilco highlands, with each blend drawing on the Fonseca family's private tequila library — the same cellars that produce Fuenteseca's decades-old releases. The Extra Añejo ages more than three years in French oak that previously held wine, Cognac, and Armagnac, and is bottled at 40% ABV in the tall, ornate bottle. Drinkhacker, having called the Reposado and Añejo excellent, found the house's aged work elegant and agave-forward under the brandy wood. Expect a nose of dried fig, orange peel, vanilla, and cedar with cooked agave beneath, opening into a silky, layered palate of caramel, dried fruit, baking spice, and soft French-oak tannin with a long, refined finish that keeps the agave present. Honest note: a luxury extra añejo at a luxury price — for the Cognac drinker and the collector, with Fonseca's own Fuenteseca as the reference point on the same shelf. Neat, in a snifter, slowly.
