Clase Azul Plata Tequila
Clase Azul Plata is the unaged one — the same organic highland agave as the famous Reposado, in a clear-and-blue ceramic decanter, without the eight months of whiskey wood. Arturo Lomelí founded Clase Azul in 1997 and remains its master distiller; the tequila is made from 100% organic blue Weber agave from Los Altos, slow-cooked in stone ovens, double-distilled, and bottled at 40% ABV in a decanter thrown and painted by hand by artisans in Santa María Canchesda in the state of México; production has moved from NOM 1416 to the house's own Casa Tradición, NOM 1595, so check your bottle. Wooden Cork describes it as crisp, herbal, and sweet, an exceptional blanco for sipping or premium cocktails; All About Margaritas calls it the choice for premium Margaritas if the budget allows. Expect a nose of cooked agave, anise, and citrus with a soft sweetness, opening into a smooth, gently sweet palate of agave, vanilla, and a touch of pepper with almost no heat and a short, clean finish. Honest note, and the enthusiast reviews are blunt: Agave Matchmaker's tasters find it sugary-sweet with little agave, and Long Island Lou calls the house very smooth, very sweet, and not for purists — this is the Plata for the drinker who finds blanco tequila harsh and wants the decanter on the bar. For a premium Margarita, a Paloma, or a shot without salt. The bell, unaged.
