This is Código 1530's six-year Origen in George Strait's own edition — the King of Country is a founding investor, and this is the prestige bottle with his name on it. Código is the project of former Crocs CEO Ron Snyder and Federico Vaughan, backed by Strait, Brett Hull, and Mike Shanahan; it's made at Varo Destilería, NOM 1616, in Amatitán from fully mature blue Weber agave, cooked in stone-clay ovens, fermented with yeast from a local bakery, and double-distilled, additive-free. Inside is Origen — the house's extra añejo aged six years in French oak Napa Cabernet barrels, bottled at 40% ABV, numbered and wax-sealed — which Wooden Cork calls one of the most complex and collectible extra añejos produced and VinePair greeted with a yikes; check your bottle for the edition's specifics. Six years of wine wood on agave lands far into Cognac territory: expect a deep amber pour with a nose of dried fig, black cherry, dark chocolate, cedar, and leather, opening into a dense, silky palate of caramel, cooked agave, roasted cocoa, baking spice, and the Cabernet's fruit and soft tannin, with a very long, warm finish. Honest note: a collector's extra añejo at a collector's price, and the Strait edition adds the name to the box — for the fan, the Cognac drinker, or the gift that has to be the best one.
