Código 1530 Reposado is six months in French oak Napa Cabernet barrels, and it pours darker than most reposados — VinePair calls the hue almost maple. Código is the project of former Crocs CEO Ron Snyder and Federico Vaughan, backed by George Strait, Brett Hull, and Mike Shanahan; it's made at Varo Destilería, NOM 1616, in Amatitán from fully mature blue Weber agave, cooked in stone-clay ovens, fermented with yeast from a local bakery, and double-distilled, additive-free. The Reposado rests six months in the same uncharred French oak Cabernet barrels as the Rosa, bottled at 40% ABV. The house describes the brightness of ripe agave with the warm undertones of whiskey; VinePair found a nose rich in cooked agave with more besides. Bourbon & Banter, tasting the family, wished for more so he could map what the six months added to the Blanco. Expect cooked agave, vanilla, and red fruit on the nose with a faint tannin, opening into a rounded, gently sweet palate of caramel, cherry, baking spice, and toasted oak with the Cabernet's fruit and a warm, moderately long finish. Honest note: wine barrels give red fruit and tannin rather than the vanilla-caramel of bourbon wood, so this reads more like a light añejo than a rested blanco — the reposado for the wine drinker. For a reposado Old Fashioned, a Margarita with depth, or neat. The code, six months in Cabernet.
