Grand Reserve is Corralejo's premium añejo — a longer-aged, small-batch blend from the hacienda where Mexican independence began. Hacienda Corralejo, in Pénjamo, Guanajuato, is the birthplace of Miguel Hidalgo, the Father of Mexico, and one of the first estates in Mexico to sell tequila commercially, in 1775; it's one of the few distilleries outside Jalisco allowed to make tequila, revived by Leonardo Rodríguez Moreno in 1996 at NOM 1368. The Grand Reserve is 100% hand-picked blue Weber agave cooked in clay ovens, double-distilled in copper pot stills by the 400-year-old Charentais method borrowed from Cognac, aged as an añejo in a selection of oak casks, and bottled on the estate at 40% ABV in a bottle the hacienda blows itself; check your bottle for the age and cask details. Expect a nose of caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and dried fruit with cooked agave beneath, opening into a richer, rounder palate than the standard red-bottle Añejo — butterscotch, baking spice, a touch of cocoa, and a gentle oak grip — with a long, warm finish and less of the house's dry pepper.
