G4 Extra Anejo 6 Year Old Tequila
InsideHook's headline on the G4 6 Year was do whatever you can to find this — six years in Felipe Camarena's old George Dickel barrels, from the family behind El Tesoro and Tapatío. G4 is named for four generations of Camarenas making tequila in Los Altos since 1937, and Felipe built El Pandillo, NOM 1579, in Jesús María in 2011 with his sons Luis Felipe and Alan to make additive-free tequila his way: estate agave slow-roasted 22 hours in stone ovens, crushed by a handmade metal tahona he named Felipestein, fermented with the family's agave yeast, double-distilled in copper, and cut with a 50/50 blend of harvested rainwater and spring water. The 6 Year Reserva Especial is that tequila aged six years in the ancient ex-Dickel Tennessee whiskey barrels Felipe has used since the distillery opened, bottled at 40% ABV in a limited, numbered release presented in a handmade wooden box. Long Island Lou, sent a pre-release sample, called it really some special stuff. Expect a nose of cooked agave, leather, caramelized toffee, and florals, opening into a rich, layered palate of vanilla, brown butter, dried fruit, and oak with the highland agave still speaking under six years of Tennessee wood, and a very long finish. Honest note: a collector's extra añejo from a cult distillery — the rare aged tequila purists and whiskey drinkers agree on, and priced for the hunt. Neat, in a Glencairn, slowly. G4, six years.
