Gran Centenario Añejo is the Selección Suave method at full stretch — añejo tequila blended with older reserves, the way Lázaro Gallardo did it in his Tequila tavern in 1857. Gallardo launched Gran Centenario in 1895 for the coming century; his son designed the Art Deco bottle with the Angel of Independence in the 1920s, and it's made today at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, the Cuervo family's Casa Cuervo, home of 1800 and Maestro Dobel. The Añejo is 100% blue Weber agave from the Cuervo estates, slow-cooked in brick ovens, double-distilled, aged in new American oak for the añejo term and blended in the house method with older reserves, and bottled at 40% ABV in the Art Deco bottle. 88 Bamboo tasted the Plata, Reposado, and Añejo together and calls the aesthetic among the most stylish in tequila; Drinkhacker has covered the line since 2008. Expect a nose of caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and dried fruit over cooked agave, opening into a smooth, rounded, sweet palate of butterscotch, baking spice, and oak with a warm, moderately long finish.
