Gran Centenario Cristalino is the house's aged tequila filtered clear — añejo smoothness in a blanco's glass, from the family that invented blending rested and old tequilas together. Lázaro Gallardo, a tavern keeper in the town of Tequila, began the Selección Suave method in 1857 and launched Gran Centenario in 1895; his son designed the Art Deco bottle with the Angel of Independence in the 1920s, and it's made today at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, the Cuervo family's Casa Cuervo, home of 1800 and Maestro Dobel — the house that popularized cristalino. The Cristalino is 100% blue Weber agave from the Cuervo estates, slow-cooked in brick ovens, double-distilled, aged in oak as an añejo, blended in the house method with older reserves, then charcoal-filtered to remove the color while keeping the barrel's vanilla and caramel, and bottled at 40% ABV in the Art Deco bottle. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, honey, and a faint toasted oak, opening into a silky, gently sweet palate of agave, caramel, and light spice with a clean, smooth finish and no color to give the age away. Honest note: cristalino is a divisive category — purists find the filtration strips character with the color — and this is the affordable way into it from the house that made it a thing.
