Leyenda is Lázaro Gallardo's original recipe — the extra añejo he made to share with close guests more than 150 years ago — and Drinkhacker calls it vibrant beside the brooding Gallardo. Gallardo, a tavern keeper in the town of Tequila, began blending rested and long-aged tequilas in 1857 and launched Gran Centenario in 1895; his son designed the Art Deco bottle with the Angel of Independence in the 1920s, and it's made today at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, the Cuervo family's Casa Cuervo. Leyenda is 100% hand-picked blue Weber agave from the Cuervo estates, slow-cooked in clay ovens, slowly double-distilled in copper, aged in new American oak barrels past the extra añejo minimum, and bottled at 40% ABV in the Art Deco bottle. The house: intensely aromatic apple, pear, and raisin, with subtle sweet wood, maple, eucalyptus, clove, and thyme. Drinkhacker tasted it beside the Bordeaux-finished Gallardo and found Leyenda the brighter, more vibrant of the pair. Expect a nose of baked apple, pear, raisin, and cooked agave with maple and a herbal lift, opening into a smooth, rounded palate of caramel, vanilla, clove, and new-oak sweetness with a long, elegant finish. Honest note: a Cuervo-house extra añejo built for the whiskey and Cognac drinker — smooth, sweet-leaning, and priced well under the decanter brands. Neat, in a snifter, after dinner. The legend.
