Gran Centenario Reposado Tequila
Gran Centenario Reposado is the bottle the Selección Suave method was invented for — rested tequila blended with much older tequila, the way Lázaro Gallardo did it in his Tequila tavern in 1857. Gallardo launched Gran Centenario in 1895 for the coming century; his son designed the Art Deco bottle with the Angel of Independence in the 1920s, and it's made today at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, the Cuervo family's Casa Cuervo, home of 1800 and Maestro Dobel. The Reposado is 100% blue Weber agave from the Cuervo estates, slow-cooked in brick ovens, double-distilled, rested in new American oak casks and blended in the house method with older reserves, and bottled at 40% ABV in the Art Deco bottle. Drinkhacker reviewed it for the first time in 2024 alongside the Plata and Gallardo; 88 Bamboo tasted the Plata, Reposado, and Añejo together. Expect a nose of cooked agave, vanilla, and caramel with a light oak spice, opening into a smooth, rounded, gently sweet palate of agave, honey, and baking spice with a warm, moderate finish — the older reserves in the blend adding a depth a young reposado doesn't have. Honest note: a Cuervo-house reposado built for smoothness — sweeter and softer than the enthusiast bottles, and one of the most-poured reposados in Mexico for exactly that reason.
