Maestro Dobel 50 '1968' Extra Anejo Tequila
Dobel 50 1968 is the first tequila ever finished in Armagnac barrels — eight years in American oak, then the French brandy casks, from twelve-year-old single-estate agave, in a collector's edition that won't be repeated. The Dobel 50 Anniversary Series began in 2022 with 1967, a sherry-finished extra añejo for founder Juan Domingo Beckmann's fiftieth birthday, and continues each year with a vintage marking the events of fifty years prior; Beckmann is the eleventh-generation head of the Cuervo family, and the series is made at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, from agave grown twelve years on a single family estate in the volcanic lowlands of Tequila. 1968 integrates the house's best extra añejo vintages, aged a minimum of eight years in American oak and finished in Armagnac barrels from Gascony, bottled at 40% ABV in luxurious presentation; fewer than a few hundred bottles reach the US. The house: honey, dried fruit, chocolate, and tobacco, silky-smooth and sweet with a slightly bitter, exquisite aftertaste. Maxim calls the Armagnac finish particularly nuanced; Robb Report notes each of the trio marks a first for the brand. Expect a deep mahogany pour with a nose of prune, fig, honey, and old oak, opening into a dense, silky palate of chocolate, dried fruit, tobacco, and Armagnac rancio with a very long finish. Honest note: a museum-grade collector's tequila at a museum price — for the Armagnac drinker and the collector completing the series. Neat, in a snifter, slowly. Dobel 50, 1968.
