Maestro Dobel Diamante Cristalino Reposado Tequila
Diamante invented the cristalino — in 2008, before Don Julio 70, before Patrón Cristalino, before any of them, Juan Domingo Beckmann filtered a blend of reposado, añejo, and extra añejo clear and started a category. Beckmann is the eleventh-generation head of the Cuervo family, and Dobel is the acronym of his name — Domingo Beckmann Legorreta — built with master tequileros Marco Anguiano and Luis Yerenas at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, from 100% blue Weber agave off a single family estate in the volcanic lowlands and spring water from the aquifers beneath the Tequila volcano. Diamante is a blend of reposado, añejo, and extra añejo aged in European oak, charcoal-filtered to remove the color while keeping the barrel's character, and bottled at 40% ABV in the embossed apothecary bottle. VinePair: surprisingly spicy and vibrant compared to most cristalinos, each sip coating the palate with luxurious weight and a depth that captures both agave and oak — an affordable three-age blend. 88 Bamboo tasted it as the world's first cristalino. Expect cooked agave, vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak with a spiced edge, silky and rounded, with a long, clean finish and no color to give the ages away. Honest note: cristalino divides purists, but if you're going to own one, the original with three age statements in the blend is the one — and it's the best-selling cristalino in the store for a reason. Chilled, neat, or in a Cristalino Margarita. The diamond that started it.
