Maestro Dobel Silver is the base of the house that invented the cristalino and the smoked tequila — the clean, unaged single-estate blanco Juan Domingo Beckmann built the brand on. Beckmann is the eleventh-generation head of the Cuervo family, and Dobel is the acronym of his name, founded in 2008 with master tequileros Marco Anguiano and Luis Yerenas at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, from 100% blue Weber agave off a single family estate in the volcanic lowlands and spring water from the aquifers beneath the Tequila volcano. The Silver is that agave cooked, double-distilled, and bottled unaged at 40% ABV in the embossed apothecary-style bottle modeled on a nineteenth-century laboratory flask, with the maestro's signature on the label. Master of Malt: a joven known for its crispness. Expect a clean nose of cooked agave, citrus, and a faint floral sweetness, opening into a smooth, crisp, medium-bodied palate of agave, white pepper, and a lowland minerality with a clean, moderately long finish. Honest note: the polished, smooth end of blanco from a big house — enthusiasts will want more rustic agave, and the Silver is built to be the smoothest Margarita on the back bar, which it is.
