Tapatio Blanco Tequila
Tapatío is the house tequila of La Alteña — the Camarena family's own label, sold in Mexico since 1940, the same tahona-crushed juice as El Tesoro at a price that made it a bartender cult. Don Felipe Camarena opened La Alteña, NOM 1139, in Arandas in 1937, and his grandson Carlos — the tequilero behind El Tesoro and Ocho — runs it today with his sister Jenny: 100% estate highland blue Weber agave, slow-roasted in masonry ovens, crushed by a two-ton stone tahona, fermented with the fibers in wooden tanks, and double-distilled in copper pots; Charbay brought Tapatío to the US in 2012. The Blanco is that tequila bottled unaged at 40% ABV, additive-free, in the tall clear bottle with the red-and-white label. VinePair: a cult-like following and a bartender favorite, small-batch and traditional despite the industry's modernization. Expect a nose of roasted agave, citrus, and highland florals with the tahona's clay minerality, opening into a full, oily palate of cooked agave, black pepper, and lime with a long, clean finish — Wooden Cork calls the La Alteña blanco style earthy, mineral, and the benchmark for traditional highland blanco. Honest note: the best-value blanco from one of the three most respected distilleries in Jalisco — buy it by the case for Margaritas that taste like tequila. For a Margarita, a Paloma, or neat in a copita. Tapatío.
