Tapatio Reposado Tequila
Tapatío Reposado is the Camarena family's house blanco rested about four months in refill American whiskey casks — VinePair says it's priced a touch high for a well but should absolutely be your reposado Margarita. Don Felipe Camarena opened La Alteña, NOM 1139, in Arandas in 1937, and his grandson Carlos — the tequilero behind El Tesoro and Ocho — runs it today with his sister Jenny: 100% estate highland blue Weber agave, slow-roasted in masonry ovens, crushed by a two-ton stone tahona, fermented with the fibers in wooden tanks, double-distilled in copper pots, and rested in refill ex-American whiskey barrels — old casks that lend little color and let the agave lead — then bottled at 40% ABV, additive-free. Difford's documents the refill-cask approach. Expect the Blanco's roasted agave, citrus, and clay minerality with a whisper of vanilla and a rounder body, the tahona funk fully intact, and a long, clean, peppery finish. Boozemakers, on La Alteña's reposado style: the tequila to hand bourbon drinkers who claim they don't like tequila — tahona-crushed, copper-pot, and balanced. Honest note: a reposado that still tastes like a blanco from one of the three most respected distilleries in Jalisco, at the best price the house offers on an aged bottle. For a reposado Margarita, on the rocks, or neat in a copita. Tapatío, rested.
