Germán González Gorrochotegui is the son of Guillermo González, who created Chinaco — the first ultra-premium tequila imported to the US — and Tears of Llorona is his own extra añejo, named for the weeping woman of Mexican legend, made at La Tequileña, NOM 1146, in the town of Tequila. No. 3 is 100% highland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked, pot-distilled, aged about five years in a combination of ex-Scotch, ex-sherry, and ex-brandy barrels, blended in small batches, and bottled at 43% ABV in a numbered liter; each batch is unique. Boozemakers: an otherworldly nose of truffle, baking spice, grape, and citrus that could pass for old Cognac or fine Scotch, then honeyed cooked agave, vanilla, oak, maple, fig jam, macerated raisin, and crème brûlée — breathtaking complexity that demands twenty minutes.
