Donald Hess founded The Hess Collection on Mount Veeder in 1978, pairing a working winery with his contemporary art museum, and the estate, now run by the fifth-generation Hess Persson family, farms vineyards certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Iron Corral is named for the estate's Iron Corral Vineyard and blends that valley-floor fruit with mountain lots from Hess's Mount Veeder and Napa Valley estate holdings, giving the wine both generosity and grip. The 2023 is 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested between October 2 and November 5 in a long, cool season, and aged 18 months in French oak, 40% new, before bottling at 14.2% ABV in 750ml. Senior winemaker Stephanie Pope describes aromas of anise, Santa Rosa plum, tobacco and a hint of chicory, with bright red fruit, tobacco and savory notes on the palate, a firm tannin structure and a finish that balances richness with fresh fruit. Pair it with grilled lamb, a burger with blue cheese or roasted portobello mushrooms. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
