The Hess Collection The Lion Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
The Lion is the most collectible Cabernet Sauvignon from The Hess Collection, the Mount Veeder estate Donald Hess founded in 1978 and the Hess Persson family runs today, and it is made only in the best vintages. Sourced exclusively from Ridge 7 of the estate's Veeder Hills Vineyard high on Mount Veeder, the 2019 was harvested October 16 to 29 and blended from 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot by director of winemaking Dave Guffy with consulting winemaker Celia Welch, the Napa legend behind Scarecrow. It was aged 22 months in French oak, 65% new, and bottled at 14.6% ABV in 750ml. The wine delivers lush blackberry mountain fruit with bramble, an earthy brown-spice undertone, dark cocoa and sweet vanilla and baking spice, carried by velvety, round tannins and a long finish. Wine Enthusiast rated the 2019 a remarkable 97 points, following 94-point scores from both Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator for the 2018, and the wine will reward two decades in the cellar. Pair it with dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs or lamb shoulder. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
