Traverse City Whiskey Co. is the independent, locally owned distillery in Traverse City, Michigan, that calls itself the Whiskey of the North. Founder Chris Fredrickson built the company with partners Jared Rapp and Moti Goldring around distilling methods his great-grandfather patented during Prohibition, and its Stillhouse on 14th Street downtown has been producing since the mid-2010s. Barrel Proof Straight Wheat Whiskey is the softer, sweeter counterpart to the company's barrel proof bourbon and rye. It is made from a sourced mash of 95% wheat and 5% malted barley, aged a minimum of five years in new charred oak, and bottled straight from the barrel with no water added, typically between 55% and 59% ABV depending on the batch. Wheat whiskey at this strength is rare, and the grain shows: the distillery describes honey and caramel up front, a light, bready spice through the middle, and an early, sweet finish, with a more delicate overall profile than its other expressions. It took a Double Gold medal at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and when the company first allocated it beyond Michigan it went to only about 200 retailers nationwide. A limited release.
