Traverse City Cherry Whiskeyfest Barrel Proof Batch #003
Traverse City Whiskey Co. sits in the heart of Michigan's cherry country, and its American Cherry Edition, bourbon steeped in Montmorency sour cherries, is the best-selling craft spirit in the state. Each year since 2020 the distillery has thrown Cherry Whiskeyfest around the harvest and released a small barrel proof batch to go with it. This is Batch #003. Where the standard Cherry Edition is bottled at 70 proof, the Whiskeyfest batches are bourbon from the company's own 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley mash bill, left at full cask strength with no water added, with Montmorency cherries from Leelanau County orchards near Traverse City going straight from the tree into barrels of aged whiskey after nothing more than a wash. Past batches have landed around 110 proof in runs of a few hundred to under a thousand bottles, originally sold only at the Stillhouse in downtown Traverse City. Founder Chris Fredrickson built it for people who don't like flavored whiskey: reviewers describe it as sipping like a barrel proof bourbon, rich with caramel, dark oak, vanilla buttercream and chocolate, with the cherry sitting in the back seat rather than driving, and no cloying sweetness. A once-a-year Michigan release.
