Two James Grass Widow Bourbon Whiskey
Grass Widow is Two James Spirits' revival of a pre-Prohibition Detroit whiskey name, bottled at the distillery in Corktown, Detroit's oldest neighborhood and home to the city's first licensed distillery since Prohibition, which David Landrum and Peter Bailey founded in 2011 and named for their fathers, both called James. The bourbon is a high-rye recipe of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley, aged in new charred oak and then finished for six months in Madeira barriques, the fortified-wine casks that give it its signature hazelnut and dried-raisin character. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 91 proof (45.5% ABV). Two James describes dried figs, plums, cashews, and Marcona almonds on the nose; a spicy, balanced palate with some heat up front that fades as you sip; and a medium-length, dry finish with wild berry preserves and a lingering peppery spice. The Madeira finish puts it in the same conversation as Angel's Envy's port-finished bourbon, but with the rye spice turned up and the sweetness held back, which makes it a better fit for a Manhattan or a Boulevardier than most finished bourbons, while still being easy to drink neat.
