Johnny Smoking Gun is the strangest bottle from Two James Spirits, the Corktown distillery that became Detroit's first licensed distillery since Prohibition when David Landrum and Peter Bailey opened it in 2011. It's a blend of 70% seven-year-old corn whiskey and 30% young rye, and the smoke doesn't come from peat or a smoked barrel: Two James runs the blend through a two-stage maceration with a blend of Asian teas, which is why it's classified as a flavored whiskey rather than a straight one. The distillery says it was designed specifically to complement the umami in Japanese cooking, the rich pork and fish broths of ramen in particular, and it's bottled at 43.5% ABV (87 proof). Distiller's reviewer found corn and vanilla sweetness first, then campfire smoke and spicy rye, with tobacco, leather, and toasted oak on the finish. The tea smoke sits somewhere between Lapsang souchong and a campfire, lighter and more aromatic than an Islay malt, and it does unusual things in a smoky Old Fashioned, a Penicillin riff, or a highball alongside a bowl of tonkotsu, which is where Two James intended it to end up.
