The French Connection is Two James Spirits' French-oak-finished rye, from the Corktown distillery that became Detroit's first licensed distillery since Prohibition when David Landrum and Peter Bailey opened it in 2011. The base is Two James's own Catcher's Rye, a straight rye distilled, aged, and bottled on site from Michigan-grown rye sourced from Wing Farms in Ann Arbor and a family farm in Ludington, run through the distillery's 500-gallon Vendome copper pot still and aged in 53-gallon Independent Stave barrels with a number-four char on the sides and toasted heads. For this release the four-year-old rye was moved into French oak barriques, the 225-liter casks used in Cognac and Bordeaux, for a secondary finish, and it was bottled at a hefty 60% ABV (120 proof) with no chill filtration or dilution to speak of. Catcher's Rye on its own runs to orange zest, cherry, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, burnt sugar, dark chocolate, and vanilla, and the French oak and the extra proof deepen that into something richer and more tannic. At 120 proof it's a slow neat pour with a splash of water, or the backbone of a serious Manhattan or Sazerac where a 90-proof rye would get lost.
