Weller's wheated bourbon story goes back to 1849, when William Larue Weller began sealing his bottles with a green wax thumbprint as a mark of quality. After his death in 1899, his company eventually merged with the Stitzel family's distillery — whose earliest employee was a young Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle, who got his start working for Weller before making the wheated bourbon name that would later eclipse it.
