Pact No. 8 is the Blood Oath finished in Calvados casks — the apple brandy of Normandy — and it's the 2022 edition of Kentucky's most collected annual bourbon series. Every spring since 2015, Lux Row master distiller John Rempe has blended a set of rare, well-aged Kentucky bourbons, finished at least one in an unusual cask, and bottled 51,000 numbered bottles at 98.6 proof — body temperature — swearing never to reveal the sources. For Pact 8 he married three extra-aged ryed bourbons of 8, 11, and 14 years, with a portion finished in Calvados barrels whose apple-and-oak character threads through the blend. Expect a nose of baked apple, caramel, and vanilla with the rye bourbons' spice and a whisper of the brandy's orchard fruit, opening into a rounded palate of toffee, cinnamon, dried apple, light oak, and pepper, finishing medium with a gentle fruit sweetness. Honest reception: this is the Pact that reviewers rank gentlest — The Bourbon Resource found Pact 9 far more intense by comparison, and The Whiskey DR called 8 lackluster — while fans of subtler finishes appreciate that the Calvados doesn't shout.
