Pact No. 9 is the Blood Oath that went to Spain. Every spring since 2015, Lux Row master distiller John Rempe has blended a set of rare, well-aged Kentucky bourbons, finished at least one in an unusual cask, and bottled 51,000 numbered bottles at 98.6 proof — body temperature — swearing never to reveal the sources. For the 2023 release he pulled three extra-aged ryed bourbons — 7, 12, and 16 years old — and finished them in Oloroso sherry casks from southwest Spain, the dry, nutty, oxidative style that Scotch distillers prize, with a crimson label to mark the occasion. The Bourbon Resource found pepper, sugar, dark fruit, and maple on the nose, then sherry, brown sugar, figs, pepper, and peppermint, finishing long with pronounced pepper and spice — far more intense than Pacts 7 and 8. Expect the Oloroso doing what it does to whiskey: dried fig and date, toasted almond, a rancio-like depth, layered over the bourbons' caramel, vanilla, and rye spice, with the 16-year component bringing leather and old oak, finishing long and warm. Honest note: Amongst the Whiskey admits having long steered clear of the line as pricey and gimmicky before trying this one, and the series divides drinkers who want full transparency.
