Campari rebuilt Bond & Lillard from the judges' tasting notes at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, where the original took the Grand Prize — and distilled it at Wild Turkey. Bond & Lillard was one of Anderson County's founding whiskeys: John Bond began distilling near Lawrenceburg in 1820, and in 1869 the family partnered with C.C. Lillard and put both names on the label. In 2017 Campari revived it as the first of its Whiskey Barons Collection, honoring the pre-Prohibition names that built bourbon; it's distilled and bottled at the Wild Turkey distillery down the road, though Jimmy and Eddie Russell weren't involved. The bourbon is Wild Turkey's mash bill — believed 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley — aged a minimum of seven years in timber warehouses, then charcoal-filtered, a process Campari says converts harsh congeners into more elegant esters, leaving a lighter color and more floral notes; bottled at 100 proof in a 375ml. WhiskyCast: dark chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar on the nose, thick, viscous, and spicy, a long, dry finish. The Whiskey Jug found it quite unlike every other Wild Turkey — a unique sweet character. The Whiskey Reviewer: minty apple pie, Granny Smith and brown sugar, crisp and light for 100 proof. Bourbon & Banter: drinks lighter than its proof, a well-balanced pour worth checking out.
