Calumet Farm Small Batch is the entry to a bourbon line named for the Lexington thoroughbred stable behind eight Kentucky Derby winners and two Triple Crowns — Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948. The bourbon is Western Spirits' label, drawn from a large private stock of Kentucky straight bourbon that its older releases say was distilled and aged in Bardstown — which, with the 74% corn, 18% rye, 8% malted barley mash bill, points to Barton 1792, the distillery behind the 1792 line. The Small Batch is a no-age-statement blend of Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 86 proof in the bottle with the stable's devil's-red-and-blue silks; check your label for the batch. Barton's high-rye recipe at a modest proof: expect a nose of caramel, vanilla, and cherry with a rye-spice edge, opening into a light-to-medium palate of brown sugar, cinnamon, and toasted oak with a moderate, gently warming finish.
