The Heart Release is Maker's Mark's 2024 Wood Finishing Series bourbon — designed by the distillery's own production team as their answer to what a Maker's Mark bourbon should be, finished on twenty virgin French oak staves in two stages and bottled at 111.7 proof. Bill Samuels Sr. founded Maker's Mark in 1953 at Star Hill Farm in Loretto, Kentucky, on a wheated mashbill built to avoid bitterness; the Wood Finishing Series, launched in 2019, takes fully matured cask-strength Maker's and finishes it in the limestone cellar on custom stave profiles — the same method as Maker's 46 and Private Selection, pushed further. The Heart is chapter two of the series' second trilogy: cask-strength Maker's finished on ten virgin French oak staves for five weeks, then ten more for nine weeks, bottled at 111.7 proof in a limited run. Breaking Bourbon: bright raspberry, cranberry, and caramel with commanding charred oak on the nose; milk chocolate and maple syrup turning savory charred oak and pretzel on the palate; and a robust, forceful bitter-oak finish with molasses, clove, and dark chocolate — prickly and polarizing.
