Old Scout is Smooth Ambler's sourced MGP high-rye bourbon — 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malt, around five years old, 99 proof, non-chill-filtered — the bottle that made a West Virginia distillery famous for honesty about sourcing before honesty was fashionable. John Little and TAG Galyean founded Smooth Ambler in Maxwelton, West Virginia in 2009; while their own whiskey aged they bottled MGP barrels under the Old Scout name and said so on the label, and the picks became a cult — Pernod Ricard bought a majority stake in 2016. Old Scout Straight Bourbon is hand-selected batches of MGP's 36%-rye bourbon, approximately five years old, blended, and bottled at 99 proof without chill filtration, about 4,500 cases a year. The house notes: sweet and smooth, butterscotch and cherry pipe tobacco, exceptionally drinkable for 99 proof. Expect the MGP high-rye signature — cherry, caramel, cinnamon, rye pepper — with the body chill filtration would have stripped and a long, spiced finish.
