Weller Single Barrel is one barrel of Buffalo Trace's wheated bourbon at 97 proof — the seventh Weller, launched in 2020 — and Breaking Bourbon rated the 2024 release 3.5 out of 5 for apple juice, golden raisin, and fresh wheat bread. William Larue Weller is credited with the first wheated bourbon in 1849; the brand passed to Stitzel-Weller under Pappy Van Winkle and then to Buffalo Trace, where Sazerac distills it from the wheated mashbill — roughly 70% corn, 16% wheat, 14% malted barley — it also uses for the Van Winkle line. The Single Barrel is one hand-picked barrel, believed six to seven years old, bottled at 97 proof without a warehouse or barrel number on the label. Breaking Bourbon on the 2024: apple juice, golden raisin, corn syrup, summer fruit, fresh wheat bread, vanilla, and new oak on the nose; creamy vanilla, nutmeg, dry cinnamon, white peppercorn, caramel, and strawberry on a silky palate; and a finish of chewy oak, spiced dried apple, creamy strawberry, brown sugar, and baking spice. Honest note: Bourbon Culture calls the Single Barrel a mistake for not printing barrel details, and they have a point — what you get is a single barrel of Pappy's recipe at a proof between Special Reserve and Antique, allocated and hunted; for the Weller collector and the drinker who wants the fruit-forward side of the wheater.
