Woodinville Straight Rye Whiskey is a 100% rye from Woodinville Whiskey Co. in Woodinville, Washington, the distillery founded by Orlin Sorensen and Brett Carlile with the late Maker's Mark master distiller Dave Pickerell as their mentor. The rye is grown exclusively for Woodinville on the Omlin family farm in Quincy, Washington, mashed, distilled and barreled in Woodinville, then trucked back over the Cascade Mountains to age in the distillery's own barrelhouses in Quincy, where Central Washington's extreme temperature swings drive the whiskey deep into the wood.
The barrels are made from oak seasoned outdoors for eighteen months to soften tannins, then slowly toasted and heavily charred, and the rye is bottled at 90 proof. Drinkhacker rated it a B, finding raw honey, spearmint and subtle fruit on a softer-than-expected nose, with oak, cream soda, mint and cracked black pepper on the palate. Woodinville describes cinnamon, clove and fruit leather on the nose with caramel, wood spice and honey on the palate and a long finish. A true farm-to-bottle Washington rye and a great Sazerac base.
