Aalborg Taffel Akvavit
Aalborg Taffel Akvavit is the original Danish akvavit, first made in 1846 by Isidor Henius in the city of Aalborg and still the benchmark for the category. Taffel is a clear, caraway-driven akvavit: neutral grain spirit is distilled with caraway seed, the defining botanical of Scandinavian aquavit, along with a touch of citrus and other spices, and bottled at a bracing 45% ABV. It is presented in a 750ml bottle with the classic red label.
The taste is bold, dry caraway with hints of citrus peel and herbs and a clean, warming finish. Tradition calls for serving it ice-cold in small glasses with herring, smoked salmon, meatballs or a Christmas smorgasbord, chased with a cold beer. Bartenders also use it in place of gin or vodka in a Bloody Mary, a Gimlet or an Aquavit Sour.
