Amrut Indian Peated Single Malt Whisky Cask Strength
Amrut Peated Cask Strength is Indian single malt made from Scottish peated barley and bottled straight from the barrel at 62.8% — Tastings.com rated it highly and Whisky Monkeys asked whether it's a taste of Islay from India. Amrut was founded in 1948 and launched India's first single malt in Glasgow in 2004; the distillery sits at 3,000 feet in Bangalore, where the tropical climate matures whisky three times faster than Scotland. The Peated Cask Strength is barley peated to about 24 ppm in Scotland, shipped to India, distilled in copper pots, aged around four years in ex-bourbon American oak in Bangalore heat, and bottled uncut at 62.8% without chill filtration or color. The Whiskey Wash: smoked barley, charred wood, salted butter, and a dark sweetness beneath the peat. The Whiskey Jug finds the tropical aging turning the smoke into something oily and sweet rather than medicinal. Expect a big, hot, smoky malt — bonfire, salted caramel, dried fruit, toffee — that takes water well and keeps giving. Honest note: cask-strength peated whisky at this price is rare from anyone, and Amrut's tropical aging makes it read older than the Islay equivalents — for the Ardbeg drinker who wants something new, and the cask-strength collector. Neat, with water, slowly. Amrut, peated, cask strength.
