Amrut is where Indian single malt begins. The name means "nectar of the gods" in Sanskrit, and the Jagdale family founded the company in Bangalore in 1948 — the same year India became independent — spending its first decades making spirits largely for the armed forces. Malt distilling started in 1982, but the audacious move came in 2004, when Amrut chose to launch India's first single malt not at home but in Glasgow, in the heart of Scotch country, where the reception was far warmer than anyone expected. The turning point was Fusion, released in 2009: 75% unpeated barley from northern India blended with 25% peated barley imported from Scotland, matured in Bangalore's heat, and bottled at 50% ABV. In 2010 Jim Murray scored it 97 points and named it the third-best whisky in the world out of 4,000 — an unheard-of result for a non-Scottish malt at the time, and the moment the global trade started paying attention. The house style is bold, spicy, full-bodied, and tropical, shaped by a climate where one year of maturation roughly equals three in Scotland; Amrut prizes indigenous six-row Indian barley for its extra flavor, and everything is non-chill filtered and natural color. The range runs from the flagship Fusion and the unpeated Indian Single Malt through Peated, Cask Strength, the Amalgam blended malts, and coveted limited releases like Portonova and Greedy Angels. Still family-run, three generations on.
