anCnoc 12 is the Knockdhu distillery's flagship — a Highland malt from the edge of Speyside that had to change its name in 1994 because drinkers kept confusing it with Knockando — bottled at 40%, and one of the best-value 12-year-olds in Scotland. John Morrison built Knockdhu on Knock Hill in Banffshire in 1894 from local grey granite, with spring water from the hill and worm-tub condensers that give the spirit weight; Inver House bought it in 1988 and rebranded the whisky anCnoc, Gaelic for the hill. The 12 is matured mainly in ex-bourbon American oak with a portion of sherry, and bottled at 40%. Dramface: golden delicious apple, pear, vanilla syrup, honey, ginger, cinnamon, and pink grapefruit peel on the nose; grain-forward malted biscuit, vanilla, apple, and citrus peel on the palate; and a finish of vanilla syrup, pear, citrus, and herbs. The Whiskey Wash, 7 out of 10: immediate sweetness, buttery vanilla, malty and sippable. Scotchology, The Whisky Study, and Road to Dram all call it the sleeper of the Highland 12s. Honest note: the 40% keeps the finish short and the price low — for the Speyside-style drinker who wants apples and honey without paying for the label, the Highball, and the daily dram. Neat or with a drop of water. anCnoc, the hill.
