Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 Year Batch 4 Scotch Whisky
Traigh Bhan is Ardbeg's annual nineteen-year-old — named for the singing-sands beach on Islay, each batch bottled under a full moon with the recipe on the label — and Batch 4 leans on a higher share of Oloroso sherry casks than the batches before it, at 46.2%. Ardbeg has distilled on the Kildalton coast since 1815 and was rescued by Glenmorangie in 1997 — LVMH owns both now — with Dr. Bill Lumsden directing the whisky; Traigh Bhan, launched 2019, is the distillery's age-stated annual: nineteen-year Ardbeg from ex-bourbon and Oloroso casks, a different proportion each year, bottled at 46.2% without chill filtration. The house on Batch 4: matured in a slightly higher proportion of Oloroso, more mentholic and herbal, with intense smoke in its peaty wake. Drinkhacker on the neighboring Batch 5 finds the series' signature — smoky bacon and campfire into pineapple, baked apple, and Meyer lemon, almost tart, with brown sugar. Expect nineteen years of Ardbeg gone soft and complex — menthol, herbs, dried fruit, sherry nuttiness — over the house smoke. Honest note: Traigh Bhan batches are collected like vintages, and Batch 4 is the sherry-leaning one — for the Ardbeg collector building the run, and the drinker who wants old Islay with a sherry accent. Neat, in a Glencairn. Traigh Bhan, Batch 4.
