Balblair 12 Year Old is the entry point to one of the Highlands' oldest distilleries, founded in 1790 in the village of Edderton near the Dornoch Firth. After years of releasing vintage-dated bottlings, Balblair returned to age statements in 2019, and the 12 Year quickly became one of the best-reviewed malts at its price, matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks and finished in double-fired American oak.
Bottled at 92 proof, the 12 Year is warm and inviting: milk chocolate, caramel and vanilla up front, with honey, ripe orchard fruit and a toasty, fortune-cookie sweetness underneath. The finish is medium-long with a gentle spice and creamy oak. It is unpeated, richly textured and a shade fuller than most 12-year Highland malts, and an ideal everyday sipper for anyone who likes Glenmorangie or Dalmore.
