Bernardus, the Carmel Valley winery, bottles this Pinot Noir from Rosella's Vineyard, in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County. The appellation runs along a bench above the Salinas Valley, where cold Pacific wind and long, sunny days give small berries with deep color and concentrated flavor. Bottled at 14.3% alcohol, this is a rich, full-bodied style. The nose offers ripe plum and boysenberry, and the palate adds black cherry fruit with subtle baking spices. Tannins are soft and the finish is long and silky, so it drinks well on release without needing extended cellaring. A brief decant opens the fruit and spice further. Pair it with roast duck, grilled pork chops with a fruit glaze, or mushroom and Gruyere flatbread. It also stands up to hearty weeknight dishes such as beef stroganoff.
