Bernardus was founded by Dutch racing driver Ben Pon, who settled in Carmel Valley in pursuit of a Bordeaux-quality red, and the winery has sourced Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County since 2002. The grapes for this wine are hand-picked and sorted, then fermented in small individual fermenters. The wine then spends about seven months in French oak barrels before blending. Bottled at 14.0% alcohol, it is deep garnet in the glass with aromas of ripe plum and cherry, a little spice, and light toasty oak. The palate is rich and full-bodied for Pinot Noir, with black cherry and boysenberry flavors and a long, soft finish. It is delicious now and will keep developing in the bottle. Pour it with roast duck, grilled lamb chops, mushroom risotto, or a weeknight steak. Decanting for a few minutes helps the aromas open up. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
