Big Nose Kate Blended American Whiskey is a Western whiskey named for one of the frontier's great characters: Mary Katherine Horony, the Hungarian aristocrat's daughter turned immigrant, orphan, gambler and entrepreneur who ran dance halls and saloons across the Southwest and was Doc Holliday's partner in life and business. The brand was launched by distiller and blender Melissa Heim with partners in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Kate herself once lived and worked.
The whiskey is a blend of bourbon, rye and malt whiskeys sourced from distillers across the country, brought together and bottled at 90 proof. Big Nose Kate describes dry sherry and cherry fruit up front with cereal grain and oak, finishing on mellow baking spice, with a robust body and rich mouthfeel. Heim has said the brand is not meant to be a gendered whiskey but a salute to overlooked frontier adventurers, and it is a smooth, well-priced pour for an Old Fashioned or a whiskey ginger by the campfire.
