Bonal Gentiane Quina Aperitif
Bonal Gentiane-Quina is a French aperitif wine made since 1865 in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont at the foot of the Chartreuse mountains. Created by Hippolyte Bonal, it is made by infusing gentian root, cinchona bark (the source of quinine) and herbs from the Grande Chartreuse massif into a mistelle base of grape must and spirit. Bonal was famous as "ouvre l'appétit," the key to the appetite, and was an early sponsor of the Tour de France. Bottled at 16% ABV in a 750ml bottle.
The taste is rich and bittersweet with dried fruit, raisin and cocoa from the mistelle, earthy gentian, quinine bitterness and a long, savory finish. Serve it neat or over ice with an orange twist as an aperitif, add soda for a spritz, or use it in place of sweet vermouth in a Manhattan or a Negroni for a deeper, more bitter drink. A cult favorite among bartenders.
