Botella Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir
Botella is the second label from Sea Smoke, one of the best-known Pinot Noir producers in the Sta. Rita Hills, and winemaker Don Schroeder makes it from grapes grown in vineyards neighboring the Sea Smoke estate. Each lot is fermented separately in individual blocks, and compared with the estate wine, Botella sees less time on the skins, earlier picks for brighter aromatics and shorter barrel aging, about 12 months. Only around 30 percent of the barrels are new French oak, which keeps oak impact low so the fruit and the soil can lead. The name Botella refers to the mineral-rich soil type found at the Sea Smoke estate and other top sites in the appellation. Bottled at 14.5% alcohol, the wine shows raspberries and red cherries with chaparral and bouquet garni, followed by vanilla bean and a touch of toffee. It is vibrant, aromatic and quicker to open up than the estate wine, which makes it a good entry point.
