Brassfield Estate Winery grows its reserve Pinot Noir in High Valley, a small appellation in Lake County. The fruit comes from four blocks in a westward-facing box canyon beneath a saddle in the ridge, where cool coastal air flows through and makes it the coolest site in the valley. The soils are ancient lakeshore and alluvial deposits, and the vines are a blend of Dijon clones. Grapes are hand-picked in the early morning, each block is fermented separately in open-top oak fermenters or small stainless tanks with twice-daily punchdowns, and malolactic fermentation finishes in barrel. The wine ages in 25 percent new French oak, with the rest in neutral barrels and tanks, with monthly lees stirring. Bottled at 13.5% alcohol, it is light-bodied and savory, with clove, dried cherry and a hint of reduction on the nose, then bright cranberry acidity, firm tannins, aged leather and truffle, and a long finish. Pair it with roast chicken, duck confit or mushroom risotto. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
