Caisteal Chamuis 12 Year Oloroso Sherry Finished Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Caisteal Chamuis 12 Year Old is a sherried Island blended malt from Mossburn Distillers, the company behind Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye. Named for Knock Castle, the ruined keep on Skye's Sleat peninsula, it marries peated Hebridean malts aged twelve years in refill American oak, then moves them to American oak Oloroso sherry barrels and finally a solera of Oloroso-seasoned European oak butts.
Bottled at 92 proof and lightly peated at under 20 ppm, it pours a hazy honey gold and leads with buckwheat honey and marshmallow with a wisp of smoke, then marzipan, fig, date and a fruity Oloroso richness on the palate with a faint campfire note behind it, finishing short with a drying grip that cuts the sweetness. The Whiskey Wash scored it 7 out of 10 and called it more Highland sherry bomb than peat monster. A generous, dessert-friendly Island dram at a fair price.
