Caisteal Chamuis Heavily Peated Bourbon Barrel Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Caisteal Chamuis is a heavily peated Island blended malt from Mossburn Distillers, the company behind Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, named for the ruined Knock Castle on Skye's Sleat peninsula. It marries peated Hebridean malts through a multi-stage maturation in first-fill and refill American oak, virgin oak with Oloroso-seasoned heads, and a final rest in first-fill bourbon barrels.
Bottled at 92 proof, it leads with distinct peat smoke and juicy fruit on the nose with a vanilla edge, then a surprisingly sweet, confection-like palate of honey, caramel and orchard fruit under the smoke, with a gentle, warming finish. The Whiskey Wash scored it 6 out of 10 and found it built more for drinkers curious about peat than for hardened smokeheads. A friendly, affordable introduction to Island whisky and a good base for a smoky highball.
