Charbay 24 Years Old No. 89 Brandy
Charbay is the Karakasevic family distillery, founded in 1983 by Miles and Susan Karakasevic and now run from Ukiah in Mendocino County by their son Marko, the thirteenth generation of a Serbian winemaking and distilling line. Brandy No. 89 is one of the family's long-game projects. In the winter of 1989 Miles distilled a wine of 74% Pinot Noir and 26% Sauvignon Blanc, an emphatically Californian choice over the Ugni Blanc of Cognac, twice through the family's custom Alambic Charentais copper pot still, and put it into new French Limousin and Nevers oak. It stayed there 24 years. When the time came, 22 barrels were selected and bottled into about 1,000 cases, and Marko refused to bring it below 46% ABV (92 proof) because the spirit had knitted together so well at that strength. The distillery's own note is pear, jasmine, toasty vanilla and dark chocolate on the palate with a finely balanced finish of heat and spice, and Distiller.com, which scored it 93 points, found bruléed sugar on the nose and remarked on how much fruit survives 24 years in oak. A once-only release: when the 22 barrels are gone, No. 89 is gone.
