The Clydeside Distillery opened in 2017 inside the old Pump House at Queen's Dock, the Victorian building that once controlled the swing bridge on Glasgow's River Clyde, and it's the project of Tim Morrison, whose family ran Morrison Bowmore for decades and who founded the independent bottler A.D. Rattray. It was the first single malt distillery in Glasgow's city center in more than a century, and it sits directly across the water from Robert Napier's shipyard, which is where this bottle gets its name: Napier was the engineer credited as the father of Clyde shipbuilding, and his mantra, quality, quality, quality, is printed on the label. The whisky is made from 100% Scottish barley and Loch Katrine water, matured for more than six years in Oloroso sherry casks, and bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration. The sherry shows without shouting: ripe berries, sweet rose, and tropical fruit on the nose, orange marmalade, cherry, and vanilla on the palate, and a warming finish of clove and ginger. A modern Lowland malt with real Glasgow history in it.
