Combier Elixir
Élixir Combier is the 1852 digestif of Distillerie Combier in Saumur, the oldest working distillery in the Loire Valley, founded in 1834 by confectioner Jean-Baptiste Combier and his wife, who created the world's first triple sec in the back room of their sweet shop before building a full distillery in 1848 beside the Saumur cavalry school. The Élixir recipe grew out of Jean-Baptiste's time in prison, where he met the chemist François-Vincent Raspail and took Raspail's own recipe as the starting point for his liqueur. Combier produced it until 1980, then shelved it for three decades before relaunching it in 2011 from the house archives, in its original packaging. Around fifteen plants and spices, drawn from the Loire Valley as well as Africa, India and Southeast Asia, are infused and then distilled in the copper stills that still run under Combier's Eiffel-engineered still hall: aloe, nutmeg, myrrh, cardamom, cinnamon and saffron among them. It pours a bright golden colour at 38% ABV, with a warm oriental-spice nose and a spicy, saffron-led palate, and the distillery recommends it neat after dinner.
