Janéa is named for Tory Brown's sister — the one who suggested Common Ground barrel-age its gin in the first place. Julian Peebles and Tory Brown, tech-industry coworkers turned lifelong friends, founded Common Ground Spirits in Berkeley in 2020 as a Black-owned craft distillery with a mission built into the name: spirits as the thing people find common ground over. Janéa is their limited, single-cask barrel program. Release 01 filled a five-year-old Navy Strength rum barrel with the Basil & Elderflower gin; Release 02 takes Gin Recipe 03 — the blood orange and tarragon gin — and rests it ten months in bourbon barrels from Home Base Spirits, a fellow Bay Area craft distillery. The wood does what good gin finishing should: it rounds rather than dominates. Expect oak, honey, toffee, and vanilla woven into the original's bright citrus and gentle anise, with light caramel, dried stone fruit, and baking spice emerging on the palate, and the tarragon-fennel signature still clearly present under the barrel sweetness. It pours a soft gold and drinks like something between a gin and a young whiskey, which is exactly the point — the distillery recommends it neat, in an Old Fashioned, in a Manhattan, or anywhere you'd reach for gin but want more weight.
